Carbon monoxide detectors can be hardwired or plug-in. When a sensor detects dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, it sends an electronic pulse to the alarm. The higher the concentration, the faster the alarm will respond. Most detectors will beep 4 or 5 times in a row about every 4 seconds to warn of dangerous CO levels. A short chirp every minute likely means the detector is low on battery
