I have a hardwired smoke alarm in my lobby, do my other alarms need to be hardwired as well?
No.
Many homes already have a hardwired smoke alarm installed in the hallway. This was required by legislation several years ago and is therefore particularly common in rental properties and new build properties. If this is the only alarm in your home, your system will need an upgrade. The alarm may also not comply with regulations requiring all alarms to have sealed 10-year lithium batteries.
In this case you have two options, you can upgrade the hardwired alarm and add an RF module for £50. This will allow it to interconnect with any other alarms we install. Another option is to replace the system with a battery-operated (stand-alone) alarm when you upgrade the system to make it compatible with your home.
The installation of smoke alarms can take varying amounts of time, depending on certain factors such as: the number of alarms required, the type of alarm system installed and the layout of the property.
Hardwired systems are more complex to install and can take a full day, depending on the number of alarms and the existing wiring condition of the property. Upgrading a hardwired system takes much less time than installing it. Because hardwired systems are connected directly to your property's main power supply, the power will need to be turned off periodically during the installation process.
Stand-alone systems are simpler to install and can be installed in most properties within a few hours.
