Battery-operated smoke detectors work by using a battery to power the alarm. As the battery power weakens, so do the alarms. Some battery smoke alarms use 9V batteries that last 1-5 years, while others use 10-year lithium batteries. The lithium battery is not replaceable, but the 10-year lifespan means the battery may not need to be replaced throughout the life of the alarm.
There are two types of smoke detectors: ionization and photoelectric. Ionization smoke detectors use a small amount of radioactive material between two electrically charged plates. When smoke enters the detector, the circuit breaks and triggers the alarm. Ionization smoke detectors are more responsive to flames.

In which rooms should I install smoke alarms?
Please check your local building, fire or life safety codes for your specific requirements or call your local fire department. But generally speaking, smoke alarms need to be installed:
Inside every bedroom, outside every sleeping area (such as hallways), and on every level of the home, including the basement.
On floors without bedrooms, install an alarm in the living room (or den or family room) or near the stairs leading to the upper level, or both.
Smoke alarms installed in basements should be installed in the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs leading to the next level.
Larger homes may require additional smoke alarms
