My manufacturers design their products to last for about 10 years. After a decade of service, some of the alarm's components may no longer be functioning properly. The smoke detector itself, and not its battery, may be what needs replacement.

Smoke detector guards are cages made of heavy-duty steel wire that help protect smoke detectors from vandalism, accidental damage, and theft. Guards also make it more difficult for someone to disable the detector by removing the batteries.
Some smoke detector shields are made from 9-gauge steel wire, while others are made from 16-gauge steel wire. Some guards have perforations to allow smoke to enter the detector, while other guards have a square ceiling-mounted frame to which the housing is mounted.

Smoke detector guards protect smoke detectors from vandalism, theft and accidental damage. They can also make it harder for people to disable a detector by removing the battery. Smoke detector guards are commonly used in correctional facilities, hospitals, industrial areas, and educational facilities.
