When to test smoke alarms

When the test button is pressed, all smoke alarms should activate 10-15 seconds after the first smoke alarm, they should beep and flash a red light. All alarms are automatically silenced.

If you have a hardwired smoke alarm, you should also regularly test the backup battery to make sure it is working properly.

It's also a good idea to test your smoke alarm after making any major home renovations or changes, such as painting or installing new carpet. Ionization smoke alarm - the "old" type of alarm
Ionization smoke alarms are the traditional alarms that most homes currently have and are being phased out. The charged plates ionize the air, causing a high-energy current to flow through the detector. Once smoke approaches the detector, the ions are destroyed and the alarm activates.

To tell if your alarm is an ionization alarm, there will be a "radioactive" symbol on the outside of the alarm. Smoke alarms bearing this symbol are not photoelectric alarms and do not comply with the requirements of the 2017 legislation.

 

Photoelectric smoke alarm - new mandatory alarm
Photoelectric refers to the method used by alarms to detect smoke. Photoelectric smoke alarms detect visible burning particles and are also called optical or photoelectric smoke alarms.
