Do smoke alarms need to be linked by law?
Under UK building regulations, not all buildings are required to have interconnected fire alarms. Whether you are legally required to have a networked fire alarm system depends on the type of premises and the level of risk determined by a fire risk assessment.

Radio interconnection systems often need to be installed in new construction as well as buildings that have undergone major renovations and some building extensions.

Nonetheless, British Standard BS 5839-6: 2019 recommends the installation of advanced networked alarm systems with backup power and central control panels in areas with a higher risk of fire, such as commercial buildings and construction sites. Complying with the BS 5839 code ensures you are meeting your responsibilities as an employer and helps you achieve regulatory compliance.

Are interconnected smoke and fire alarms better?
Connected wireless fire alarm systems provide better fire detection capabilities than any stand-alone fire alarm. The detection range of any individual smoke detector and the audibility of any fire alarm are limited to a certain area. Having all units communicate with each other through a central fire alarm panel allows personnel in all areas of the building to receive immediate notification of a fire.

Once fire alarms sound throughout the building, the evacuation process can begin simultaneously in all areas of a large building, ensuring everyone escapes the building as quickly as possible. In addition to this, modern smart wireless alarm systems can be programmed to further aid evacuation procedures, for example by automatically activating turnstiles to allow free passage and avoid crowding and injury at the exit.

Another benefit of having a wireless interconnection system is that it is relatively low-profile to install. With no wiring required, you save money and time on labor and expensive projects involving breaking down walls. The total price of the installation will depend on the size of your premises and the amount of equipment required. However, RF interconnect systems also typically have lower operating costs, so it's all worth it in the long run.

Should the alarm be mounted on the ceiling or on the wall?

Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Wall-mounted alarms should be installed no more than 12 inches (300 mm) from the ceiling (to the top of the alarm).

If your ceiling is sloped, install the alarm within 36 inches (910 mm) of the peak, but not within the apex of the peak (4 inches (100 mm) down from the peak).

Avoid installing smoke alarms where there is moving air or drafts, such as near a window or near an HVAC system air supply.
