How smart smoke detectors work?
Despite your best efforts, fires can still happen. Vivint offers you our combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. This battery-powered, Wi-Fi-enabled smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm is fast, accurate, and does more than a regular smoke alarm. Because it connects to your home's Wi-Fi network, it can not only sound the alarm in the event of a fire, but it can also send real-time notifications to your iPhone, Android, or other smartphone. It is also able to detect fires faster than other detectors.

Its photoelectric sensor can detect excess heat and smoke, meaning you'll get an undetected fire alarm before you smell any smoke. Basic smoke alarms, on the other hand, use ionization sensors, which may take longer to identify a smoldering fire. Vivint's smoke and carbon monoxide detectors also double as carbon monoxide alarms, offering the added benefit of detecting deadly, odorless carbon monoxide for even more protection.

Additionally, the Vivint system's automated features include shutting down the home's HVAC system when a smoke alarm is triggered to prevent the spread of fast-burning flames. Vivint smoke and carbon monoxide detectors continue to operate and communicate with Vivint during a power outage and can interconnect with existing smart systems in your home.

Where to place smart smoke detectors in your home?

Smart smoke detectors will give you the first alert at any sign of fire, allowing you and local authorities to issue timely warnings to stop the spread of fire. It's important to put them in the right place so they can do their job well. In this section, we'll show you the best places to install them in your home.

1. On every level of your home
Don't forget about basements and attics, which should also have smoke detectors. Even in these infrequently used spaces, interconnected alarms are a boon, providing a home-wide warning of potential fires. Place the detector away from drafts and temperature extremes to minimize false alarms while maximizing its fire detection capabilities.

2. In the living room
Living rooms are often equipped with various electronic devices, heating equipment or fireplaces. While these elements make a space comfortable and interesting, they also present potential fire hazards, so smoke detectors are essential here. Place it so it covers the entire room and away from fireplaces or heating appliances to prevent false alarms.

3. In the bedroom
Installing smoke detectors in bedrooms is essential to alert those who are sleeping of a fire. Since smoke can rise, place the detector high on the ceiling or wall. Make sure you install one in every bedroom to ensure everyone gets an early warning and has precious time to react in the event of a fire.

4. Corridor
Hallways outside sleeping areas are also important smoke detector spots as they can detect smoke threats as they travel from one room to another. Interconnected security alarms are a plus as they ensure that alarms for a certain area of the home are communicated, thus increasing security.

5. Stairs
In the event of a home fire, these staging points in your home can be safe exit routes or dangerous traps. Installing smoke detectors near the top of stairs can provide early warning, as smoke rises first and collects at higher locations. This way, you'll be alerted in time to safely evacuate before your stairs become engulfed in smoke or fire.

6. Garage
Many garages store flammable liquids and other flammable items, which is why placing a smoke detector near the interior door leading to the garage is a smart choice. Vivint's smoke and carbon monoxide detector combo is the best choice for this location because it can detect carbon monoxide in car exhaust (as well as other sources).

7. In or near the kitchen
Cooking is the number one cause of home fires. A fire that starts in the kitchen can quickly spread to the rest of the home, causing devastating property and personal damage. Therefore, it is important to install a smoke alarm in your kitchen so that you can detect and respond to fires before they spread to other parts of your home.

How to choose the right smart smoke detector for your workplace?
There are a few things you need to consider when choosing a smart smoke detector for your workplace.

First, consider what type of detector you need.

There are two main types of detectors: ionization detectors and optical detectors.

Ionization detectors are more sensitive to smaller particles, which makes them better able to detect fast-burning fires. Optical detectors, on the other hand, are more sensitive to larger particles, which makes them better able to detect smoldering fires.

Next, decide what features you need. Some smart smoke detectors also have additional features such as carbon monoxide detection or temperature sensors. If you live in an area prone to power outages, you may want to choose a detector with a battery backup.

Finally, consider installation. Some smart detectors install by simply plugging them into an outlet, while others require hard wiring. If you're not used to doing electrical work, it's best to leave the installation to professionals.

Once you consider all of these factors, you will be able to choose the best smart smoke detector for your workplace.
