When individual fire alarm devices are interconnected, when one smoke alarm detects a fire, it triggers all alarms in the building to sound simultaneously. Both hardwired and wireless fire alarms can be interconnected into a connected fire alarm system.

While this can be done by physically connecting the units using cables, this is a time-consuming and costly process, so the most practical option is to use radio signals to communicate between the units, creating a complete wireless fire alarm system .

Radio interconnected smoke detectors and fire alarms can be battery powered or mains powered. Some networked fire alarm systems use a mix of the two to create a hybrid solution. This often occurs at sites that have existing hardwired alarms installed but are looking to upgrade their existing fire detection system with additional wireless units.
